Our History

Since 1891, Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home & Cremation Services has served Grand Island, Nebraska, and the surrounding communities with dignity, honor, and unwavering compassion. Our journey began as Sondermann & Co. Undertaking and Furniture, founded by Joseph Sondermann. He acquired a furniture and undertaking business from Herman Bohne and G.F. Ryan, establishing his firm in the First National Bank Building at 116 West Third Street. In 1900, the business relocated to 112 East Third Street.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1921 when Sondermann & Co. merged with Bucheit-O'Laughlin, which had a location at 318-320 West Third Street. The West Third Street address housed the furniture operations, while the funeral home relocated to 406 West Koenig Street. A photograph from 1937 captures the essence of our 406 West Koenig Street location, a building originally built as the residence of Julius and Anna Guendel, a prominent wholesale liquor dealer in Grand Island.

The Sondermann family's dedication to providing exceptional funeral services continued to grow, and the family name became synonymous with honor, respect, and support for grieving families. Through the years, the funeral home has adapted to the evolving needs of the community, expanding its services and facilities to offer a comprehensive range of options for memorializing loved ones.
