Experience the Best of Alaska

Welcome to Kemp Pottery, a studio/gallery owned and operated by Steven Kemp since 1978. In 2002, his son Matt Kemp joined as part-owner, and together they have been creating wheel-thrown and hand-built stoneware, as well as porcelain functional and decorative ware. Their work is based on a foundation of drawing and various decorating techniques, including sgraffito, sumi brush technique, glaze painting, sculpture, graphic storytelling, and more. This diverse range of techniques allows them to create distinctive lamps, dinnerware, commemorative plates, tiles, sinks, garden sculpture, fountains, stained-glass, and abstract and figurative sculpture. Steven's inspiration comes from his observations of Cape Cod, including birds, flowers, fish, turtles, frogs, bog, sea, and sky. Matt's work explores narratives and the human condition, as well as functional pieces that balance form, surface texture, and treatment. The father-and-son team finds their collaboration to be their greatest gift, creating a body of work intended as art to be lived with, while nurturing an environment of mutual creativity.
