About the Artist

Hawkins Biggins is a visual artist who has been practicing the art of photography since high school. She is a graduate of the New England School of Photography in Boston and has been working as a commercial photographer, artist, and teacher in Hawaii since 2008. She has a passion for teaching and leads workshops and photowalks in downtown Honolulu, at Lyon Arboretum, and other venues. She also teaches middle schoolers at Mid Pacific Institute and seniors through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. When she's not behind a lens, she enjoys spending time with her teenage son, playing board games, going on urban photowalks with her iPhone, reading, dreaming about traveling, and hiking.

Artist Statement

Hawkins Biggins is drawn to photograph nature and urban environments because it embodies the dichotomy of the struggle of modern existence between isolation and intimacy. She finds connection and a sense of order in the chaotic cityscape. Her most recent digital art work utilizes layering techniques in Photoshop to create composite images, blending the natural and man-made environment into its essential colors, shapes, forms, and textures to capture a stronger sense of place.
