Our Story

A C S Architects has been serving the Bay Area since 1976, offering unique solutions for residential architecture. Our office is led by Architect, Kyu Young Kim, who takes pride in taking ownership of each project from pre-design to construction completion. Kyu has had the privilege of working under renowned architects, including Craig Steinman and Karl Sherwood-Coombs, and has gained experience in Seoul, South Korea, Paris, France, Manhattan, New York, and San Francisco.

Our Team

Our team consists of talented individuals who bring their unique perspectives and skills to the table. Kyu Young Kim, or "Q, " is our lead architect who has worked under Byoung-Soo Cho in Seoul, South Korea, and has stints in Paris, France; Manhattan, New York; and San Francisco. He also sat on the City of Palo Alto's Architectural Review Board from 2014-2017, serving as the Vice Chair in his final year. Kyu is a licensed architect in both California and Hawaii and teaches part-time at San Jose State University.

Hanna Joo is our designer and administrative manager. Raised in Paris, France, Hanna brings a wealth of European influences combined with uniquely Californian culture. She leads the interior design team while adding the final touch in detailing and provides recommendations on all things interiors. Prior to joining A C S Architects, Hanna Joo and Kyu Kim started the design firm J&K Atelier.

Karl Sherwood-Coombs, who partnered with Arthur Craig Steinman in the late 1980s and took over the office in the early 2000s, handed it off to Kyu in 2020. Karl was also the founder of Atelier Architecture and Planning prior to partnering with Craig and renaming their joint venture to A C S Architects. Karl was notably an avid wine educator and ambassador, in addition to his contributions to architecture.
