Located in the historic Eastern Market building in Washington, D.C., Eastern Market Pottery has a rich history dating back to 1963. The studio has undergone its fair share of challenges, including floods and fires, but remains committed to its mission of being a community art space. Under the ownership of Sarah Buffaloe and her partner since 2019, the studio continues to flourish, carrying on traditions while introducing new ones.
Our Services
As a teaching studio, Eastern Market Pottery offers instructor-led classes for adults, which emphasize hands-on learning and creative expression. Our instructors are experienced artists who are passionate about sharing their skills with students. Our classes are designed to cater to different skill levels and interests, ensuring that everyone can find a class that suits their needs.
Class Schedule
Our studio schedule is designed to ensure that students can fit pottery-making into their busy lives. Classes are held Monday through Thursday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays. Our instructors are dedicated to providing a supportive and conducive learning environment, allowing students to explored their creativity and master various pottery techniques.
Instructors
Our studio is home to a talented group of potters who bring their unique styles and expertise to the table. Our instructors have spent years honing their craft and are eager to share their knowledge with students. From Sarah Buffaloe, our studio owner, to Ellen Jaffe, who has been with us since 1978, each instructor brings their own brand of creativity and experience to the studio.
Try-It Classes
Not sure if pottery-making is for you? Our Try-It classes are the perfect way to get started. For a small fee, you can spend two and a half hours with one of our experienced instructors, learning the basics of pottery-making. Our Try-It classes are designed to introduce beginners to the world of pottery, and we encourage you to try it out before committing to a full course.
Glazing and Painting
Nicole Ponce, our studio apprentice, is responsible for maintaining and developing our studio glazes. Her unique approach to clay emphasizes the musical qualities of the medium, exploring texture, organic forms, and color theory. Nicole's work is a testament to the versatility and creativity of pottery-making.
Studio Hours and Location
Our studio is located in the historic Eastern Market building at 225 7th Street Southeast, Washington, D.C. We are open Saturdays and Sundays, and occasionally during the week, so it's best to call ahead to confirm our hours. You can reach us at (202) 544-6669.
