Meet Our Doctors

Dr. Michael S. Blackwood has been specializing in orthodontics since 1994. He is a third-generation orthodontist in the practice began by his grandfather and his father Thomas. He began his higher education by studying at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va., graduating with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He then went on to Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., and earned his doctorate of dental surgery degree. Finally, Dr. Blackwood attended University of Detroit Mercy where he earned his specialty degree in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics and a master of science.

Dr. Blackwood grew up in Potomac, Md., where he and his wife, Heidi, raised two sons. When not in the office he enjoys hiking and camping with his family. For many years he has coached middle school soccer and lacrosse.

Our Services

You and your family can take advantage of a full range of dental services here at Georgetown Orthodontics. During each visit, you will be treated by trained professionals who will provide top quality care to prevent dental problems and treat current conditions. Our services include:

• Jaw Surgery: This is a type of orthognathic surgery that is used to correct conditions of the jaw and face related to structure, growth, sleep apnea, TMJ disorders, malocclusion problems due to skeletal disharmonies, or other orthodontic problems that cannot be easily treated with braces.

• Braces: These are the most common type of orthodontic treatment and involve the use of metal brackets and wires to move teeth into their correct positions. Braces are available in both metal and ceramic options, with ceramic being a more discreet choice.

• Underbite: An underbite is a type of malocclusion where the lower teeth extend past the upper teeth. This can be treated with orthognathic surgery, orthodontic treatment, or a combination of both.

• Expander: An expander is a type of orthodontic appliance used to expand the upper dental arch in order to correct issues such as crowding and crossbites.

• Retainer: A retainer is a custom-made orthodontic appliance used to keep teeth in their new position after orthodontic treatment is complete.

• Invisalign: Invisalign is a type of clear aligner that is used to straighten teeth without the use of traditional metal braces. These aligners are removable and can be taken out to eat, drink, and clean your teeth.
