Fighting for Your Rights, Fighting for You

We are Structural Designers who bring a love for design and building to the practice of engineering. Our backgrounds provide the imperative: years of experience working on construction sites, completing degrees in both Architecture and Structural Engineering, and forming Framework upon licensure as Professional Engineers. We've bent rebar, built formwork, and poured concrete. We've built decks, framed walls, and renovated homes. Our experience allows us to understand the builder's perspective and take pride in elegant, economic structural solutions that dovetail constructability and the human factor often lost in drawings with the design intent of the project.

Our team is headed by Dustin Muhn and John Voekel, both licensed engineers in multiple states. Dustin Muhn, a connections expert, specializes in high-end wood-frame buildings in the seismically-active San Francisco Bay Area. He brings his experience as a Research & Development Engineer for Simpson Strong-Tie, where he designed and overseen thousands of materials and connector test setups under various loading conditions. John Voekel, on the other hand, has formal training in both Architecture and Engineering and has more than a decade of experience working in the industry. He believes in the honest use of materials, a hands-on, participatory approach, and close collaboration between design and building teams.

Services

At Framework Engineering, we offer a range of services including structural engineering, architectural conceptual design, construction management, teaching, component testing, inspection, researching, and hands-on building. Our engineering and drafting work is never passed on to a junior level staffer or outsourced to a draftsperson, regardless of how large or small the project may be. We've consulted on over a thousand projects throughout California, Oregon, and Washington, some with our own hands. Our experience and expertise allow us to offer a level of attention to each project that lends itself to collaborative design discussions and well-coordinated projects.

Our specialties include seismic design, retrofit and renovation, new construction, and connection design. We strive to provide structures that are not only safe, but also functional, attractive, and economical. We believe that anything worth building is worth building well, and we look forward to working with you.
