James Buchanan Hotel Pub & Restaurant

Our historic inn, dating back to 1796, is a true American treasure that has been carefully preserved and restored to its original glory. This was the boyhood home of our nation's 15th President, James Buchanan, and was built by his father, James Buchanan Sr. As a young boy, James was introduced to the world of business by his father, who opened a store in what is now our Pub. By the time James was 10, his father had become one of Mercersburg's leading businessmen, instilling a strong work ethic and sense of accountability in his young son.

After James left for Dickinson College at the age of 16, the Buchanan home was transformed into "Hotel Mercer." Over the years, the hotel changed hands several times, eventually becoming the James Buchanan Hotel. Today, we are proud to be a part of the Mercersburg Historic District and were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
