Plan Your Move, Let Us Do the Rest
Our History
Nestled in the heart of remote Northwest Colorado, the town of Meeker boasts a rich history and stunning natural beauty. Flowing through the town is the White River, teeming with trout, and dominating the town's Main Street is a landmark that whispers tales of the Old West: The Meeker Hotel. Since 1896, this historic structure has welcomed weary travelers and locals alike, its brick facade hiding centuries of stories within.
Built in 1896 by Rueben S. Ball, the Meeker Hotel replaced a small adobe building that initially served as a military barracks and later housed the hotel and cafe operated by Charlie Dunbar and Susan Wright. Dunbar, a professional gambler, tragically met his end in a card game dispute just months after the venture began. Susan's brother, Rueben Ball, joined the business in 1891, eventually inheriting the property upon Susan's passing. Under Ball's ownership, the hotel expanded in 1904 with the addition of east and west wings, encompassing a variety of businesses on the ground floor, including a drugstore, a doctor's office, and the local telephone company.
The adjacent stone building, known today as the Meeker Cafe, began its life as the Post Office in 1891. It later housed the 1st National Bank before becoming the cafe's permanent home in 1917.
Over the years, the Meeker Hotel and Cafe have seen countless changes in ownership and management and have weathered the storms of time. This historic building has served as a vibrant hub for the community of Meeker, offering a place for gatherings, celebrations, and quiet respite. The Ball family sold the hotel to Clarence P. and Lucille Mathis in 1923, marking a new chapter in the establishment's story.
