Our History

Hayes & Lunsford Electric Inc., formerly known as Hayes and Lunsford Electrical Contractors, Inc., has a rich history spanning over ninety-five years. Founded in 1926 by Van Hayes and O.T. Lunsford in a small office in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, the company began as an electric motor repair shop. From its humble beginnings, Hayes & Lunsford has grown into a prominent electrical contracting firm with branches in Greenville, South Carolina, and Asheville, North Carolina, serving clients throughout Upstate South Carolina, Western North Carolina, and Georgia.

The early years of the company were marked by resilience, navigating through the challenges of the war years and the Great Depression. Ralph Presley joined the firm in these early years as a bookkeeper, later becoming a valued partner. His contributions played a crucial role in the company's expansion during a time of economic hardship.

Expansion and Growth

Through the decades, Hayes & Lunsford has consistently expanded its capabilities and reach. The 1947 -1960 era witnessed the company's specialization into distinct electrical operations, taking on projects within the industrial, healthcare, and educational sectors across Western North Carolina.

The following decades brought about a surge in industrial development in the Carolinas, creating a wealth of new opportunities for Hayes & Lunsford. They secured contracts with prominent companies such as Champion International Paper, American Enka, Steel Case, Magnavox, Borg Warner, Reliance Electric, Henderson Furniture, Burlington Industries, and Day International, showcasing their expertise in serving diverse industries.

Furthermore, Hayes & Lunsford made significant contributions to the healthcare industry, partnering with major hospitals like Mission Hospital, Broughton Hospital, C.J. Harris Hospital, Margaret Pardee Hospital, and the V.A. Hospital in Oteen. Their involvement extended to retail operations like Belk, Proffitt's, and Dillard's, and educational institutions like Western Carolina University, UNC Asheville University, Warren Wilson College, Southwestern Technology, and various school districts.

National Reach and Diversification

The 1980s and 1990s saw Hayes & Lunsford expanding its operations beyond the Carolinas, securing contracts in Virginia and California. This period also marked a major milestone with the completion of electrical installations at water treatment facilities in Asheville, Raleigh, and Fayetteville. Their expertise was sought after by major corporations like Phillip Morris, IBM, and the new Shelby Memorial Hospital addition and heart center. Their diverse portfolio included projects at correctional institutions, further showcasing their adaptability and expertise across different sectors.

In response to the evolving needs of the industry and clients, Hayes & Lunsford expanded its services in various areas, including construction through technology and geographic expansion.

Modern Era and Commitment to Excellence

The 2000s witnessed the establishment of a branch office in Greenville, South Carolina, further solidifying Hayes & Lunsford's presence in the region. This expansion opened up new avenues for the company, securing contracts with prominent healthcare facilities like Self Memorial Hospital, Wesley Commons Retirement complex, and Anderson Medical Hospital. Greenville also became a hub for electrical projects at Greenville Memorial Hospital, St. Frances Hospital, Furman University, Clemson University, and other notable educational institutions.

From industrial projects like Miller Brewing and Asheville Regional Airport to collaborations with institutions like Rheem, Reuter Children's Center, and S.C. Greenville-Spartanburg Airport, Hayes & Lunsford continued to demonstrate its commitment to delivering exceptional electrical solutions across a wide range of sectors.
