Our Story

At Surdyk's, we're a fourth-generation family-owned and operated business, proudly serving the Twin Cities since 1934. Our family's rich history in the food and beverage industry dates back to our great-grandfather, Joseph Surdyk, who started our first store in 1934. We've come a long way since then, with an array of businesses under our umbrella, including Surdyk's Liquor, Surdyk's Cheese Shop, Surdyk's Catering, and Surdyk's Flights.

Our History

Our story began with Joseph Surdyk's vision to provide high-quality, globally inspired, and locally sourced food and drink to the community. His entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen saw him establish the first Surdyk's store at 219 East Hennepin Avenue in 1934. The store quickly grew under the guidance of Joseph's son, Bill, who brought new ideas and innovations to the table. In the 1970s, Jim Surdyk, the third-generation owner, expanded the store's offerings by introducing the Twin Cities' first specialty cheese shop. This unique concept quickly gained popularity, attracting customers from far and wide.

Our Businesses

Today, we operate a diverse range of businesses, each with its own unique charm and expertise. Our flagship store, Surdyk's Liquor, features an impressive selection of wine, spirits, beer, and cigars. Our award-winning Cheese Shop offers over 350 varieties of cheese, prepared foods to-go, and a meticulously curated selection of specialty grocery items from around the world. We're also proud to have expanded our offerings with the introduction of Surdyk's Flights, a wine market and bar located in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport, and Sidebar, a neighborhood bar and eatery in the heart of Northeast Minneapolis.

At Surdyk's Catering, we're dedicated to providing exceptional, full-service event catering for cocktail-style parties and buffet meals. Our team of experts is committed to crafting unforgettable culinary experiences that exceed our clients' expectations. With our drop-off catering services available six days a week, we cater dozens of full-service events across the Twin Cities each year. We believe that food should be both beautiful and delicious, which is why we source the best local, sustainably produced, and organic ingredients available. Our menu is inspired by our travels, the changing seasons, and our passion for food.
