Our Story

At Coloratura Furniture, we have had the privilege of using furniture as a canvas for our ideas for almost 40 years. Our journey began with a passion for art and design, and a desire to breathe new life into existing pieces of furniture. We are guided by our own sensibilities, as well as an extensive examination of history and art history, to create one-of-a-kind works of art that are truly unique and exceptional.

Our Process

Our process begins with the selection of a piece of furniture that is carefully chosen to reflect a given period and design sensibility. We then study the piece, researching various art or design movements concurrent with its era, and weave in inspirations from painting, music, film, literature, or applied arts such as furniture, textile, and graphic design. We reinterpret these inspirations with an emphasis on color and composition, joined with an underplayed emotional content, to create art historical musings.

Our Craftsmanship

We take great care in preparing each piece of furniture, repairing it if necessary, stripping it to the raw wood, and priming it before applying many base coats of enamel paint. We hand-rub the paint between coats, and the pictorial work is also executed in enamels and covered with coats of varnish. The final finish is hand-rubbed, polished, and waxed, resulting in a surface that is satiny to the touch and extremely durable.

Our Services

We offer our work in two ways. You may see a piece in our collection that is available for purchase, or you may have a special piece of furniture that you would like to see transformed by Coloratura. We accept commissions through a process of thoughtful consideration about the piece and direct communication with you, the client. We are selective about the choices of furniture to which we commit, and our work is labor-intensive, but our goal is to create a piece that is truly unique and exceptional.

Commissioning a Piece

If you are interested in commissioning a piece, we begin by reviewing photos of the furniture, including several clear views, and noting any needed repairs. We provide a general price range for the type of furniture you are requesting based on previous work, and later in the process, we provide more definite costs. We believe in building a relationship with our clients, and ideally, we meet with you in your home to see not only where and how the piece of furniture will be used but to learn about you and your interests.
