Stubbs Muldrow Herin architects, founded in 1990 after Hurricane Hugo's destruction to the South Carolina Lowcountry, has been at the forefront of sustainable and resilient design in the region. The firm was established with the intent of aiding in the rebuilding of our historic and natural setting. Today, under the leadership of Margie Longshore, AIA; Chris Altman, AIA; Billy Connell, AIA; and Jeff Johnston, AIA, SMHa continues to operate with the core principles upon which the original firm was founded: Architecture for its place, impeccable customer service, and commitment to community.

SMHa is a 20-person firm with 11 registered architects, 5 architectural interns, and a construction administrator. Our team is dedicated to providing our clients with a consistent team of licensed architects throughout the duration of a project, from initial vision and budget matching to programming and design, and all the way to construction close out. We understand that our clients are seeking a relationship: an association with an architectural firm and team who will work in collaboration with them toward a common understanding and goals; architects who will serve as their trusted advisors to help them bring about successful outcomes.

Our dedication to this community has resulted in us becoming experts in designing for the coastal region, understanding the historical architectural vernacular, complex site and climate conditions, building code parameters, zoning requirements, and the local economic climate. We also have long-term relationships with local government staff and a broad range of engineering, landscape architecture, cost estimating, and construction firms in the region.

Meet Our Team

At SMHa, we are proud of our team of dedicated professionals who are committed to providing our clients with the highest level of service and expertise. Our team includes experienced architects, interns, and a construction administrator who are passionate about creating spaces that enhance our culture and provide a positive impact on our daily lives.

Margie Longshore, AIA, serves as our President. With a deep appreciation for the rich architectural and cultural context of the South Carolina Lowcountry, Margie appreciates the opportunity for the firm's design work to contribute to the overall sense of place and character of the area. Over recent years, her work has focused on adaptive reuse, renovation, and educational projects.

Chris Altman, AIA, is our Vice President. Chris believes that, through good design and planning, our built environment can have a positive impact on our daily lives and add to the rich heritage of the Lowcountry. He is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys working closely with clients to understand their project goals and solve their specific issues.

Billy Connell, AIA, also serves as our Vice President. Raised in Mount Pleasant, Billy focuses much of his work on civic and municipal projects, bringing extensive experience and passion especially to larger, complex projects. He enjoys working closely with the Owner's leadership and staff to get to the heart of their project goals and solve their specific issues.

Jeff Johnston, AIA, is our Vice President. A graduate of Auburn University, Jeff believes architects have a responsibility in providing spaces that exceed client needs and enhance our culture by creating proudly inheritable structures for future generations. Jeff is proud to be third generation in the construction field and has found even more depth and joy to this profession and the people he works with and for.
