Our Story

At Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Homes, we pride ourselves on being a trusted and compassionate presence in the Scranton community. Our journey began in 1957 when Thomas J. Hughes, Sr. opened the original location on Saint Ann Street. Since then, we have undergone significant expansions, embracing the growth and evolution of the city.

Our History

Thomas J. Hughes, Sr. was a graduate of the American Academy of Funeral Service in New York City and served his residency at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel. Upon completion, he returned to Scranton, where he opened the original location, which remains in operation today. As the business grew, he was joined by his spouse, the former Marion Garvey, and their children, who all lived and worked together, running the funeral home and raising their family above the business.

Over the years, we have expanded our services, and our community has grown with us. In 1983, Al, the oldest son, became a licensed funeral director, followed by Tim, the youngest son, in 1987. Together, they served the Scranton community from the primary funeral home until the late 1980s, when we began working with the Mary Eagen Funeral Home. After the Eagen Funeral Home was purchased and the Eagen-Hughes Funeral Home branch was formed in the Minooka section of Scranton, we continued to expand and thrive.
