Designing Regenerative Places that Strengthen Communities

At TKWA, we are more than just architects, planners, and interior designers. We are creative thinkers, craftspeople, and advocates passionate about designing regenerative places that strengthen communities. Our story began in 1980 with a belief in living places created by the harmonious union between human activity, nature, and built space. Over the years, we have grown into a collaborative team of like-minded individuals dedicated to creating site-sensitive, environmentally responsible, and community-enriching buildings.

Our History

Our founders, Tom and Allen, have always had a mutual respect for each other's unique approach to design. From the early days, a philosophy of Wholeness has been at the heart of every decision - from the projects we undertook, to the people we hired, to the way we managed our operations. This commitment to socially and environmentally responsible practice led us to restate our Articles of Incorporation in 2018, becoming the first design firm to be a Wisconsin Public Benefit Corporation.

With feet planted firmly in both practice and advocacy, TKWA continues to expand its influence and thought leadership through built work, public policy, and research. We believe that much of the profession is focused on style-based iconic gestures, and it is more important than ever for architects to argue for architecture as part of interdependent living systems.

Our Philosophy

Wholeness is our worldview. It shapes how we act, conceive our work, organize our activities, and interact with the natural world, our built environment, and our community. Of all the forces that might have shaped the way we do our work, Wholeness rises above competing concerns, systems, schools of thought, and philosophies.

Meet Our Team

Our team is comprised of many individuals who come together to form one whole practice. We are passionate, creative, and dedicated to creating spaces that not only serve their purpose but also enhance the lives of those who use them. Our team of AIA, LEED, and Living Building Challenge professionals are committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable designs that reflect our commitment to Wholeness.

Our Services

At TKWA, we offer a wide range of services including architecture, planning, and interior design. Our projects span across various sectors such as cultural, workplace, education, religious camps, hospitality, historic, residential, public realm, and sustainability. Whether it's designing a new hotel, a cultural center, or a residential home, we approach each project with the same commitment to creating spaces that are not only functional but also beautiful and sustainable.

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond our projects. We strive to create a workplace culture that promotes environmentally responsible practices and encourages our team members to be advocates for sustainable design. We believe that the idea of sustainable design cannot be separated from the everyday work of creating good architecture. We are stewards, advocates, and creators of a vibrant public realm.

Awards and Recognition

We are proud to have received the AIA Firm Award, which is the highest honor given by the state's professional service organization. This award recognizes our commitment to creating high-quality, sustainable designs that reflect our philosophy of Wholeness.
