Empowering Artists, Enriching Culture
At New Works Writers Series, we are dedicated to producing and presenting new and existing art by, for, and relevant to artists of African descent that will enrich and educate the public and influence culture. Our mission is to continue and preserve the African heritage and celebrate the culture through various artistic disciplines such as theatre, dance, and poetry in Northwest Ohio and the Toledo area.
Our History
Founded in 1989 by Imelda Hunt, New Works Writers Series is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization that provides an arena for showcasing local area writers, poets, musicians, and actors. Over the years, we have produced over 50 plays, history publications, open poetry forums, and musical performances, showcasing numerous new talents that have gone on to be prominent in their communities and successful in their careers. We have also established the annual Northwest Ohio Poetry Slam, which has attracted more than fifty poets and audiences of over two hundred spectators to the slam.
Our Services
We offer a range of services, including classes, medical workshops, and CEU production services. Our classes provide opportunities for individuals to hone their craft, whether it's acting, writing, or other forms of artistic expression. Our medical workshops focus on medical ethics and cultural competency, helping to train medical students, medical practitioners, social workers, and other medical professionals. Our production services allow us to mount our productions in various venues, bringing our art to a wider audience.
Our Vision
Our vision is to continue to provide a platform for artists of African descent to showcase their talents and to enrich and educate the public through various artistic disciplines. We believe that art has the power to influence culture and bring people together, and we are committed to making a positive impact in our community and beyond.
