O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is one of the oldest funeral service providers in the East End section of Newport News, Virginia. The business was founded in 1933 by Otis H. Smith, Sr., who started the funeral home in a two-story framed house on Chestnut Avenue. Over the years, the business expanded as adjoining houses on both sides were purchased, creating the current facility. The Smith family has been dedicated to serving the community with compassion and care, with multiple generations of the family involved in the business.

Who We Are: Our Staff

The staff members of O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home are experienced and caring professionals who understand that each family is unique and has personal requests and traditions. These requests and traditions are of utmost importance to us. Our team is committed to carrying on the legacy of high standards of funeral service that the Smith family established.

O.H. Smith, Jr., the current manager of the funeral home, was born and raised in Newport News and is a product of the community that he and his family have served for over 90 years. He is married to Armeke, has one daughter, Chavela; one granddaughter, and two grandsons. He is an active member of Providence Baptist Church in Newport News and serves on the Usher Board. He is also a member of several funeral directors' associations and organizations, including the National Funeral Directors & Morticians' Association, the Virginia Morticians' Association, the Peninsula Funeral Directors' Association, the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and the Dochiki Civic & Social Club.

Our traditional funeral services include a visitation or viewing, a funeral service, and a committal service. We provide a variety of options for caskets, urns, and memorial keepsakes, and can accommodate any religious or cultural traditions.

We also offer cremation services, which can be arranged as part of a traditional funeral service or as a simple cremation. Our cremation services include the return of the cremated remains in an urn, scattering of the cremated remains, or placement in a columbarium.

Pre-planning options are available for those who wish to plan their funeral service in advance. Pre-planning allows individuals to make their wishes known and relieve their family members of the burden of making decisions during a difficult time. We offer pre-planning forms and guidance to help individuals make informed decisions about their funeral service.
