General Builders Supply

General Builders Supply (GBS) has been meeting the hardware needs of Madera, California residents for over 70 years. Our story begins in the 1940s when our founder, Pat Melikian, opened the store at 1920 Howard Road. Pat believed in making it easy for his customers to find the tools and materials they needed for any job, and his son, Roger Melikian, continued this tradition until the late 1970s. In 1977, Carl Wisener of Madera Lumber, Bud Smith of Smith Volpa Dodge, and CPA James Lesan became partners in the business, drawing on each other's strengths to ensure continued success.

As the years passed, the need for more space became apparent, and in 1986, Berry Construction built our current location at 1808 Howard Road. Through the ups and downs of the local construction industry, GBS has continued to grow by offering exceptional customer service and competitively priced merchandise. In 1995, Bud Smith's youngest son, Dennis Smith, bought James Lesan's share, and Bud and Carl retired, leaving Dennis and Carl to carry on the legacy.

Today, GBS remains committed to offering the same excellent selection of hardware, building supplies, housewares, painting supplies, plumbing parts, garden and construction tools, and more. Our knowledgeable, friendly staff is dedicated to helping even the most inexperienced handymen locate the parts and fixtures they need to complete their projects. We have recently added a "lock and key" kiosk, enabling us to duplicate most keys, including transponder keys, while you wait. Our mission is to conduct business with honesty and integrity, providing our community with the products and services they need at a fair price.
