Our Story
Founded in 1963, St. James Preschool has been a cherished part of San Francisco's Inner Richmond neighborhood for over six decades. We are a nonsectarian and nonprofit organization dedicated to providing quality early childhood education to children ages 2 to 5. Our commitment is to fostering a loving and supportive environment where each child's unique abilities and personality can flourish.
We believe that every child develops at their own pace and possesses unique talents waiting to be discovered. Our small school size, with a dedicated and low child-to-teacher ratio, allows for personalized attention and a nurturing learning experience. Our developmental child-centered philosophy emphasizes the importance of social, physical, and cognitive growth in a joyful atmosphere.
Our Programs
At St. James Preschool, children are grouped by age in three distinct and engaging classroom environments. Our program begins with our twos program, where little ones embark on their early learning journey. We recognize that families have diverse needs, so we offer an optional extended day program known as "The Den" for working parents. This program provides enriched activities and childcare beyond the regular school hours.
Each classroom environment is carefully designed to spark curiosity, encourage exploration, and foster a love of learning. Within these environments, we provide a rich curriculum that incorporates both traditional and innovative approaches. This includes hands-on play, arts and crafts, storytelling, music, and movement activities, all tailored to the specific developmental needs of each age group.
Our Enrichment Activities
Beyond the core curriculum, St. James Preschool places a strong emphasis on enriching experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom walls.
Our preK class enjoys weekly "Nature Connections" sessions in the beautiful Marin Headlands, led by experienced educator Lauryn. This hands-on program in science connects children to nature, encouraging their sense of wonder and curiosity through exploration and discovery.
Our "Great Books Project" is a cornerstone of our literacy program. This unique program provides access to a curated collection of exemplary picture books that are thoughtfully chosen to expose children to diverse perspectives and literary styles. These books are carefully selected and rotated throughout the year, ensuring a rich and engaging reading experience for our students.
Our students also benefit from vibrant music and movement classes led by the talented Teacher Barb. Through a mix of rhythms, beats, and melodies - from rock and blues to hip hop and nursery rhymes - our children learn about themselves and the world around them while expressing themselves creatively through song and movement.
Our Community
The St. James Preschool community is more than just a school; it's a vibrant and caring family. Parents are actively involved in school life, both inside and outside the classroom. From volunteering in classrooms to participating in fundraising events, parents contribute their time and talents to create a strong sense of community. This collaborative spirit fosters lasting friendships and strengthens the school as a whole.
