San Diego Sports Medicine

The San Diego Sports Medicine Foundation (SDSMF) was founded in 2002 to fill an existing healthcare gap for the youth of San Diego. Our mission is to provide a medical safety net to injured youth who have no access to care. We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to participate in life, and we are dedicated to providing top-quality medical care to those who need it most.

Our Services

At SDSMF, we offer a wide range of services to support the health and well-being of young athletes in San Diego. Our services include:

• Sports Injury Clinics: We provide free sports injury screenings for high school students in San Diego County.
• Outreach Programs: We work with local high schools to provide student-athletes with proper medical care, supporting and placing full-time Athletic Trainers on campus.
• Surgeries and Medical Care: We provide free or low-cost surgeries and medical care to injured youth who have no access to care.
• Student Athlete Training: We offer training and support to student-athletes, including pre-participation sports screening examinations and educational symposiums.
• Educational Symposiums: We host educational seminars and workshops to promote sports medicine and athletic training.

How We Make a Difference

Our physicians are of the highest caliber and serve as team physicians for the San Diego Chargers, ESPN X-Games, and USA National Rugby Team. We bring this top-quality care to injured youth in San Diego who are in need. Thousands of young athletes have already benefited from non-reimbursed medical care, including free MRIs, surgery, postoperative care, and bracing. Our hallmark is that no professional fees are paid to participating physicians, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and therapists. Funds raised by the Foundation are used to help defray the hard costs related to surgery.

Our Impact

For the third straight school year, we will subsidize the salaries of full-time certified Athletic Trainers in local San Diego high schools and have plans to expand the student athletic training program throughout San Diego County. Through these valuable programs, we are able to offer a medical safety net to the youth of San Diego.
