Enhancing daily life with beauty and nature

Welcome to Nanten Pottery, where we specialize in creating handmade pottery that combines the simplicity and functionality of Japanese pottery with international influences. Our artist, Hironobu "Nishi" Nishitateno, puts his heart and soul into each piece, using natural materials and colors found in nature. With a background in economics and a passion for pottery that began in childhood, Nishi creates pieces that are not only functional but also beautiful and unique.

Meet Hironobu "Nishi" Nishitateno

Raised in Saitama Prefecture, just north of Tokyo, Nishi dreamed of being a professional artist since childhood. After graduating from Hosei University in 2002 with a degree in Economics, Nishi moved south to the island of Kyushu and entered a year-long intensive pottery course at Kagoshima Kogyo Gijutsu Center. There, he learned and perfected techniques on the potter's wheel, tamed the kilns, and experimented with his own glaze recipes. Following his graduation from the school, Nishi moved back to the Tokyo area and began working for the late Eisaku Mitsuhashi, a potter well known for his bright red signature glaze. Nishi won the Arts Association Prize at the Funabashi City Annual Exhibition and was invited to exhibit his work at the All Japan Tea Bowl Exhibition. In August of 2008, Nishi moved to Loves Park, Illinois in America, just 90 minutes west of Chicago by car.

Our Pottery

At Nanten Pottery, we take pride in creating pottery that is both functional and beautiful. Our pieces are made with natural materials and glazed with colors found in nature, resulting in a unique and organic look. From teapots to bowls, each piece is handcrafted and one-of-a-kind. Our style is based on the simplicity and functionality of Japanese pottery, but we are not afraid to incorporate international influences and modern twists.

Teapots

Our teapots are a customer favorite and it's easy to see why. Each teapot is handcrafted with care and attention to detail. We use a combination of traditional and modern techniques to create teapots that are not only functional but also beautiful. Our teapots come in a variety of sizes and styles, and we are always experimenting with new designs and glazes.

Bowls

Our bowls are perfect for any occasion. Whether you're using them for a quick breakfast or a formal dinner party, our bowls will add a touch of elegance to any meal. We offer a variety of sizes and styles, from small and delicate to large and bold. Our bowls are made with natural materials and glazed with colors found in nature, resulting in a unique and organic look.

Green Tea Turnip Bowls

One of our most popular items is our Green Tea Turnip Bowls. These bowls are the perfect size for a cup of tea and are inspired by the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. The turnip shape is not only unique and visually pleasing, but it also has a special meaning. The turnip is a symbol of perseverance and strength, making these bowls the perfect gift for someone going through a difficult time or starting a new chapter in their life.
