Our Story

At Buddy's Bar-B-Q, we believe that slow smoked perfection is the key to delicious barbecue. Our story begins in 1966 with LaMuriel Smothers, a visionary entrepreneur with a passion for hospitality. With the support of her husband, Buddy, she opened the Pixie Drive Inn in Seymour, Tennessee. Together, they built a thriving community gathering spot, serving up a popular country buffet that drew customers from miles around.

Recognizing the growing demand for a flavorful, authentic barbecue experience, LaMuriel and Buddy embarked on a new culinary adventure. They were inspired by the traditional bar-b-que from Buddy's Alabama roots but felt there was something missing in the local scene. Determined to bring their vision to life, Buddy left his finance career to join LaMuriel in pursuing their passion. With the enthusiastic response from their patrons, they honed their family barbecue recipe, creating a distinct and mouthwatering flavor profile that would become synonymous with the Buddy's name.

LaMuriel's homemade creations, like her legendary lemon ice box pie, added a delightful touch to the menu, making every visit to Buddy's a memorable experience. The first Buddy's Bar-B-Q officially opened its doors in 1972 on Kingston Pike in West Knoxville, quickly becoming a beloved local favorite. LaMuriel and Buddy's dedication to serving quality food in a welcoming atmosphere resonates with customers to this day.
