Empowering People Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired
The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) is a national non-profit organization dedicated to creating a world of no limitations for people who are blind or visually impaired. Established in 1921, AFB has been a pioneer in providing accessibility solutions, advocating for disability rights, and advancing opportunities for individuals with visual disabilities.
Education
At AFB, we are committed to advocating for children with visual impairments to ensure equal access to education. We work closely with educators, policymakers, and families to promote inclusive education policies and empower teachers to effectively support students with visual impairments. Our efforts have led to significant improvements in the educational landscape, creating a more inclusive and equitable environment for students of all ages and abilities.
Employment
AFB recognizes the untapped potential of individuals who are blind or low vision in the workforce and is dedicated to helping employers realize this potential. We conduct research, provide education, and advocate for policy changes to challenge stereotypes and promote the employment of people with visual disabilities. Our work has resulted in increased awareness and understanding of the unique strengths and abilities of this population, breaking down barriers and opening doors to meaningful career opportunities.
Aging
With the growing number of older adults experiencing vision loss, AFB is working to transform aging services and support. We advocate for policies that improve accessibility and provide resources for older adults with visual impairments. Our efforts empower this population to maintain their independence and continue contributing to their communities, ensuring a fulfilling and dignified life for all.
Research & Initiatives
AFB is dedicated to conducting high-quality research related to blindness and low vision and sharing our findings broadly. Our recent endeavors include the Barriers to Digital Inclusion Survey, which provides valuable insights into the challenges faced by individuals with visual impairments in accessing digital platforms, and the introduction of the AFB Talent Lab, an innovative education experience created to bridge the accessibility skills gap.
In response to the challenges faced by job seekers with visual impairments in entering the workforce, AFB has prepared an HR toolkit to equip hiring managers and HR professionals with the necessary resources and knowledge to effectively support and hire these individuals.
AccessWorld
AccessWorld, a publication of the American Foundation for the Blind, is an authoritative source of information on technology and disability. Our quarterly issues offer in-depth, expert insights on the latest trending discussions in the field, providing valuable information for people who are blind or visually impaired.
