Our History

The Palmer House Hilton boasts a rich and storied past, with a legacy that spans over 150 years. This iconic hotel, located in the heart of downtown Chicago, has been a central hub of hospitality and innovation since its inception.

A Hotel Born from Love and Ingenuity

The story of the Palmer House begins with the romance between Potter Palmer, a Chicago business magnate, and his wife Bertha Honore Palmer. As a grand wedding gift, Potter presented Bertha with a hotel that would become known as the longest-operating hotel in North America.

A Trailblazing Legacy

The Palmer House has always been at the forefront of innovation. It was the first hotel to incorporate the light bulb, telephone, and vertical steam lift (elevator). It was also the birthplace of one of the world's most beloved confections, the brownie.

From the Brink of Disaster to Perseverance

Just 13 days after its grand opening, the Palmer House suffered a devastating fire that destroyed the hotel. However, Potter Palmer refused to give up. He secured a massive loan on his signature alone and reopened the hotel on November 8, 1873.

A House of Art and Culture

Bertha Palmer's influence on the hotel's design and decor is still felt today. She befriended French artists like Claude Monet and filled the hotel with impressionist masterpieces, Louis Comfort Tiffany glasswork, and frescoes by Louis Pierre Rigal.

A Star-Studded History

Over the years, the Palmer House has played host to some of the most prominent figures of the time, including U.S. presidents and celebrities. It has been the epicenter of social gatherings, galas, and events that have shaped the city and its culture.

Today and Beyond

Today, the Palmer House Hilton is a thriving hotel and event space that continues to evolve while honoring its rich heritage. With its commitment to innovation, luxury, and exceptional service, it stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and the enduring legacy of Bertha and Potter Palmer.
