Our Story

Our story began many years ago, when our founders, Thomas and Edward Slatkin, started their real estate investment company. As third-generation hoteliers, they had a vision to develop a luxury hotel on the sand in the Los Angeles area, a feat that had not been accomplished since the 1930s. After acquiring the real estate at One Pico Blvd in Santa Monica in 1991, their vision became a reality in 1993 with the opening of Shutters on the Beach.

Design Theory

At ETC Hotels, we believe that thoughtful design and a sense of sensibility are key to delivering friendly, unobtrusive service. Our interior design is a seamless blend of European classicism and American modernism, with a deep respect for tradition and a modern eye. Recently, renowned interior designer Michael S. Smith reimagined both Hotel Casa del Mar and Shutters on the Beach, bringing the ocean into the design with calm, soothing colors and textures.
