Our Story
Maudie's Tex-Mex has a rich history that spans multiple generations. Our journey began in 1954 when Maudie Hamilton Wilson started a humble cafe, becoming renowned for her delicious home-style cooking, which drew a diverse clientele of Austin politicos, families, neighborhoods, and O'Henry students.
Maudie had initially planned on closing her restaurant due to her limited mobility. However, fate had other plans when Joe Draker entered the picture, looking to rent the house next door. Instead, he ultimately struck a deal to acquire the cafe. In 1993, under the guidance of Roe and Pete Hernandez, along with their brother, Jorge Arredondo, and Joe, they transformed Maudie's Cafe into the Tex-Mex haven it is today. Over the years, the cafe has grown into an iconic Austin establishment and a beloved Tex-Mex family favorite, serving multiple generations.
