The Harlem Repertory Theatre (HRT) is a minority-owned and operated professional theatre company dedicated to producing thought-provoking and entertaining productions that explore the experiences of diverse ethnic, social, and cultural communities. Founded in 2004 by Keith Lee Grant, a tenured professor of Theatre at the City College of New York, the HRT has been committed to bringing high-quality, affordable theatrical performances to the Harlem community.

Our Story

The journey of the HRT began in the summer of 2004, when Grant founded the company with the support of the City College of New York. The initial season was ambitious, featuring popular Broadway musicals such as HAIR, THE WIZ, and a new musical theatre piece, VODU. The subsequent seasons showcased an eclectic range of musicals, plays, and Shakespearean comedies, including BYE BYE BIRDIE, WEST SIDE STORY, CABARET, DREAMGIRLS, TAMBOURINES TO GLORY, DUTCHMAN, and AS YOU LIKE IT.
