Located in the heart of the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains, Gilbertson's Lazy Horse Retreat offers a tranquil and serene environment for those who appreciate the great outdoors. Our retreat is a family-owned and operated business that welcomes guests with or without horses. We are nestled in a secluded valley, surrounded by the majestic Rich and Scott Mountains, with the Chilhowie Mountain Range right before us.
Our Cabins
We offer four cozy cabin rentals, each with its unique charm and character. Our cabins are carefully designed to provide the perfect blend of comfort and rustic charm. From the Rancher cabin's western cedar siding to the Treehouse cabin's log chalet, each cabin is equipped with modern amenities and designed to make your stay as relaxing as possible. Whether you're looking for a romantic getaway or a family vacation, our cabins have everything you need to unwind and enjoy the beauty of nature.
Horse Stables & Camping
At Gilbertson's Lazy Horse Retreat, we understand the love and appreciation for horses. That's why we've dedicated ourselves to providing a state-of-the-art stable, complete with indoor box stalls, 80'x100' wooden fenced paddocks, roundpens, and a half-acre lot to accommodate your horses. Our stable is meticulously maintained to ensure the health and well-being of your equine friends.
Local Attractions
While at our retreat, you'll be close to various local attractions and activities, including hiking, horseback riding, bike riding, trout fishing, swimming, and tubing. We also have a Jacuzzi available for relaxation after a long day of exploring.
Camping
For those who prefer the great outdoors, we offer camping facilities with bathroom and shower amenities. Our campground can accommodate up to two campers at a time, and we also have a 16 ft. gooseneck stock trailer available for rent.
Trail Rides
Gilbertson's Lazy Horse Retreat offers trail rides through the beautiful Smoky Mountains. With over 200 miles of trails, our expert guides will help you navigate the trails and enjoy the breathtaking scenery and views.
Additional Services
We offer professional veterinary and farrier services, as well as horse grooming and bath services. We also provide horse bedding and have a large capacity for horse feed, so you can focus on enjoying your vacation.

The cabins at Lazy Horse Retreat are described as clean, well-appointed, and cozy, making guests feel right at home. The private deck in the Treehouse cabin is a particular highlight. The Cowboy Cabin is also praised for its comfort and amenities.

Melody, the hostess, is widely praised for her warmth and hospitality. Guests feel treated like family, and her kindness and compassion are greatly appreciated.
Surroundings and Activities
The retreat is surrounded by beautiful mountains, offering peaceful and quiet surroundings. The trails in the Smokies are perfect for horseback riding, and guests can bring their horses and enjoy the scenic rides. The nearby Apple Valley Restaurant is also recommended for good food.
Recurring Guests
Some guests have been coming to the retreat for years, with one couple returning for the past 15 years. This speaks to the high level of satisfaction and loyalty among guests.
Parking and Trailers
However, one guest had a negative experience with parking their trailer, citing that it was not suitable for larger trailers. This is contradicted by another guest who has had no issues with parking their 3-horse slant trailer.
