Inspiring Minds Through the Arts
Welcome to the Temple Performing Arts Center (TPAC), a premier venue for cultural and artistic events in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As the northern anchor of the city's renowned Avenue of the Arts, TPAC offers year-round opportunities to experience a diverse array of performances and events presented by university departments and community partners. Our venue is also available for private or public bookings, providing a unique setting for your engagement or event.
The History of the Temple Performing Arts Center
TPAC's roots can be traced back to 1882 when Russell Conwell, a Bostonian pastor and lawyer, came to Philadelphia to lead the Grace Baptist Church. Conwell began tutoring young men in the evenings, and the number of students quickly grew from seven to hundreds. In 1888, The Temple College was chartered, and in 1907, it became Temple University. The university's commitment to providing educational opportunities for those seeking advancement has remained a cornerstone of its mission.
The Temple, once known as The Baptist Temple, has a rich history as a hub for intellectual and political figures. Martin Luther King Jr., President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Margaret Mead, Helen Keller, General Eisenhower, Alistair Cooke, and Edward R. Murrow are just a few of the notable individuals who have spoken or presented at the venue.
In 1974, Temple University acquired The Baptist Temple, and it was later certified as an Historical Building by the Philadelphia Historical Commission in 1984. In 2003, the American Institute of Architects designated it as a Landmark Building. Today, the building is known as the Temple Performing Arts Center and serves as both a Temple University and Philadelphia venue for arts, events, and ideas.
