The Norumbega: A Name Rich in History

The earliest record of the name "Norumbega" dates back to 1524 when a similar word, "Aranbega, " was written on a map drawn by explorers who spoke of a sparkling city in the New World. Legends describe "Palaces overlaid with gold leaf and surmounted by crystal towers" perfectly depict Penobscot Bay. Joseph Barker Stearns, a native Mainer, revolutionized the fire alarm system with his patented reverse currents in 1831 after many failures. His success led him to focus on perfecting the famed Norumbega Emitter, a crucial piece of technology. In 1886, he built The Norumbega as a symbol of his achievements.
