Woodblock Printmaking Process
Woodblock prints are impressions on paper made from carved and inked woodblocks. Non-image areas are carved away from the wood, and the remaining raised shapes and lines will create the print image. We follow traditional Japanese techniques, using water-based pigments and handmade paper to create unique and intricate designs.
About Me
As an artist and filmmaker, I have had the privilege of exploring the world of Japanese woodblock printmaking. My journey began with a chance encounter with a woodblock print at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The beauty and elegance of that print inspired me to learn more about this ancient craft. Since then, I have dedicated myself to mastering the technique of woodblock printmaking, and have even created a documentary film about the process, titled "Becoming Made".
Documentary
"Becoming Made" is a rare look at how an artist makes and is made by her environment and her art. The film explores the intricate process of creating a woodblock print, as well as the creative journey of an artist. The film features interviews with other artists and woodblock printmakers, and provides a glimpse into the traditional techniques and materials used in this ancient craft.

We offer workshops and classes for individuals who are interested in learning the art of Japanese woodblock printmaking. Our classes are designed to cover the basics of the process, from carving to inking and printing.
