To inspire and educate an inclusive community centered in clay.
At Pottery Northwest, we believe that clay is for everyone. Our mission is to foster an inclusive community centered in clay, promoting innovation, arts excellence, and education. As a non-profit organization, we are dedicated to providing a safe and welcoming environment for people to explore their creativity and personal growth, regardless of their socio-economic circumstances.
Our History
Founded in 1966, Pottery Northwest is Seattle's preeminent non-profit ceramics organization. Over the years, we have established ourselves as a leading force in the ceramics community, attracting artists and students from all over the world. Our nationally renowned ceramics studio offers a vibrant range of programs to over 1,900 students annually.
Creating Access
At Pottery Northwest, we prioritize creating and ensuring access to ceramics for everyone. We offer over 50 classes and workshops a year on a sliding scale, as well as a robust scholarship program and free public events focused on education and community building. In 2023, we proudly supported BIPOC and income-challenged students with over $60K in scholarship awards - with more planned for 2024.
Promoting Innovation
Our Visiting Artists Program brings top-tier ceramicists to our studio, providing our students with an opportunity to learn from a diverse group of talented artists through workshops, gallery talks, and exhibitions. By bringing in a select group each year, Pottery Northwest provides a platform for ceramics excellence, discourse, and innovation.
Fostering Growth
Our Studio Apprenticeship Program is a one-year work exchange program that provides exposure, instruction, and hands-on experience with all facets of ceramics studio management. Participants learn studio maintenance and tech skills, gaining valuable work experience while benefiting from unlimited studio access to create work and explore new projects. Many of our apprentices have gone on to become studio technicians and managers, ceramics instructors, professional exhibiting ceramic artists, and have been accepted into competitive ceramics graduate programs.
Get Involved
At Pottery Northwest, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to engage with clay, regardless of their background or financial situation. We rely on donations to support our scholarship programs, community events, and studio operations. Your contribution helps us foster innovation and creativity in our ceramics community. Please consider supporting us by donating to our cause.
