Our History

Fritz's Railroad Restaurant was started in 1954 by Fritz and Virginia Kropf, who opened their first fifties-style drive-in restaurant at 32nd and Brown Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas. Fritz's inventor skills led him to develop a food delivery system in the basement of his home, which he installed at the 18th street location in the early 1970s. The patented system, nicknamed the "Skat Kat, " became an instant hit with customers who affectionately referred to it as a train.

Fritz's train memorabilia and engineer's hats for kids further enhanced the railroad theme. The youngest of Fritz and Virginia's children, Fred, and his wife, Mary, eventually took over the business in the mid-1980s. Fritz continued to work part-time at Fritz's, sharing his love for the business with everyone he met.
