Our History

Schaetter Funeral Home stands as a testament to generations of dedicated service, woven into the very fabric of Fredericksburg, Texas, and the surrounding Hill Country. Established in 1868, our humble beginnings reflect the frontier spirit of the time, where skilled cabinetmakers often served as the community's first line of support during times of loss.

Early burial practices in this region were varied, ranging from earth burials in designated cemeteries established by early colonists to family plots on their ranches and even roadside interments for travelers on their journey to new settlements. Important community cemeteries like Vereins Cemetery (now known as Der Stadt Friedhof) were laid out by colonists, while the Catholic community established their own cemeteries reflecting their faith and traditions.

As the town of Fredericksburg grew, so too did the need for a dedicated establishment to provide compassionate support and dignified final arrangements. It was in 1882 that Heinrich Schaetter, a Prussian immigrant with a skilled touch, established what would become Schaetter Funeral Home, marking the start of a legacy built on tradition, care, and unwavering commitment to serving families in their times of need.
