Creating exceptional spaces, exceeding expectations

Hunter Smith Associates is a reputable architectural firm that was established in 1981, focusing on both residential and commercial projects for new construction and renovation. Over the years, the firm has grown from a solo practice to a fourteen-person firm, and now operates as a Sole Practitioner, with Mr. Smith's primary focus being design work and construction management. Our firm has built a reputation for creating exceptional spaces while meeting the client's goals and budget constraints. We believe that it is often better to make space flow and be more functional without necessarily building bigger.

Our firm has been successful in maintaining a team of dedicated professionals, having had no turnover since the beginning. Our employees love the work area, the space, and the aesthetics, which has contributed to the company's success and growth. Our business was about $20 million back when we started the project and has grown to $55 million, and we are headed towards $65 million by the end of the year. This growth is a testament to the quality of work and service that we provide to our clients.

Projects in Progress

At Hunter Smith Associates, we are currently working on several exciting projects, including:

  • New Home for Doro Development, Cheshire CT: We are working on a new home for Doro Development in Cheshire CT. A key challenge for this project was securing a Variance from the Cheshire ZBA to allow a coverage increase from 10% to 16%. With the approved variance, we were able to design a ground floor plan with a Master bedroom suite along with a Living room, dining room, kitchen, laundry, guest lavatory, and two-story entry foyer.
  • Adaptive Re-use Projects - 67 Trumbull & 399 Orange Streets, New Haven CT: We are working on two buildings that had been used for decades as Office occupancies and are being converted to Residential Units. We are able to meet the Building Code requirements by implementing alternative features that are acceptable to both the Building Officials and Fire Marshal, which saved the owner of these buildings about $100,000 in construction costs on each of their renovations.
