Tom Ertl started his career as a custom home builder in 1987, building homes in Tallahassee's developments of Killearn Estates and Ox Bottom Manor. From there, Ertl Homes was building luxury custom homes in the new northeast subdivisions including Golden Eagle, Rose Hill, Bobbin Trace, and Pilckem Ridge, and many others.
