Our Story

Asia America is not merely a collection of furniture and antiques; it's a tapestry woven from years of exploration, passion, and a deep appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Asia. Our journey began over thirty years ago in Portland, Oregon, blossoming from a personal fascination with the art, history, and craftsmanship found throughout the Asian continent. For over two decades, our physical store resided within the historic International Harvester Building, becoming a beloved destination for those seeking unique and authentic pieces from Asia.

Recently, under the visionary leadership of Dan Barbato and Ningshu Fang, Asia America has embarked on a new chapter, embracing a modern sensibility while staying true to its roots. We've expanded our reach through a robust online presence, allowing us to connect with a global community of art and furniture enthusiasts. Our showroom experience has also been meticulously crafted to provide an immersive journey through the diverse aesthetics of Asia.

Every item in our collection tells a story, a whisper of ancient traditions and modern innovations. From the intricately carved furniture of China to the vibrantly colored textiles of India, from the serene Zen gardens of Japan to the spiritual artifacts of Tibet, our inventory reflects the vast and fascinating tapestry of Asian cultures.

Our Team

At Asia America, our team embodies a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and a reverence for cultural diversity. We combine years of experience living and traveling in Asia with professional backgrounds in art history, archeology, and international management. This unique blend of expertise allows us to curate a collection that is not only beautiful but also historically significant and culturally enlightening.

Dan Barbato, co-founder and owner, brings a global perspective shaped by his childhood in Illinois, studies in Vermont, and time spent living in China, Italy, and Japan. His passion for cross-cultural understanding and the art world ignited during his service in the Peace Corps and has only intensified through his work with Asia America. He previously spent over 12 years in Shanghai working for a U.S.-China joint venture advertising company.

Ningshu Fang, Dan's wife and co-founder, shares his deep appreciation for art and history. Born and raised in Shanghai, China, Ningshu's artistic journey began with her grandmother, who instilled in her a love for traditional Chinese art. After years in Japan working in the fashion industry and alongside Ningshu spent her time learning traditional Chinese art.

Together, Dan and Ningshu use Asia America as a platform to share their passion for Asia, its culture, its stories, and its art. Our hope is that each piece we curate will inspire you to explore the beauty and diversity of the Asian world.
