Our History

The Ellsworth name has been synonymous with funeral services in South Dakota for over 70 years. Our story began in 1948 when Bob's parents, Ray and Blanche, opened the first Ellsworth Funeral Home in Estelline. Since then, our family has been dedicated to providing exceptional funeral services to families in need. In 1979, Bob and Cindy Ellsworth took over the operation of the funeral home in Madison, and in 2012, they expanded to Howard with the Willoughby Funeral Home. After a brief period of passing the torch to Alex Nurnberg in 2018, the Ellsworths resumed operation of both locations in 2023, bringing with them their years of experience and expertise.

Our Facilities

Our facilities are designed to provide a comfortable and peaceful environment for families to gather and celebrate the life of their loved one. Our Madison location features a 150-seat chapel, a casket selection room, reception area, and garage. We're proud of our historic building, which was built in 1906 and has been fully renovated to meet the needs of modern families. Our Howard location, Willoughby Funeral Home, has also been fully renovated to provide a comfortable and peaceful environment for families.
