About Your Spine

Your spine is a complex and vital part of your body, providing structure and support. Comprised of 24 bones called vertebrae, the spine is designed to protect the spinal cord, a bundle of nerves that connects your brain to the rest of your body. Understanding the anatomy of the spine is essential for maintaining its health and preventing injuries or disorders.

Anatomy of the Spine

The spine is comprised of three main sections: the cervical spine (neck), thoracic spine (mid-back), and lumbar spine (lower back). Each section has a specific function and plays a crucial role in maintaining proper posture and movement. The normal spine has an "S"-like curve, allowing it to withstand stress and distribute weight evenly.

Cervical Spine (Neck)

The cervical spine, consisting of the first seven vertebrae, is characterized by its high degree of mobility and unique circulation system, with blood vessels bringing oxygenated blood to the brain. Two vertebrae, the atlas and axis, differ from the rest of the spine due to their specialized anatomy.
