Our History
Family Owned & Operated Since 1953
On January 22, 1953, Leander "Ben" and Bernice Moss opened Moss Funeral Home in the old Hummert home located at 535 N. 5th Street in Breese. Later that same year, Ben and Bernice recognized a need to serve citizens in other parts of the county and opened their second funeral home at 604 Munster Street in Germantown, nestled within the Victorian home of Rosalyn Phillips.
In 1966, construction was completed on the current funeral home in Breese, and in 1974, a new facility was built in Germantown, situated at 500 Railway. David Moss, the third oldest child of Ben and Bernice, joined the family funeral business in 1972. He continued to work alongside his father until he purchased the business in 1981. In 1982, Dave expanded the family's legacy by adding a third funeral home in Trenton, converting the historic Mannhard House located at 105 South Main Street. Adding to his commitment to serving the community, David purchased the Glanzner Funeral Home in Trenton in 1990.
Phillip A. Moss, the second child of David and Karen Moss and the third generation to join the family business, began his work with Moss Funeral Home in 2000. On January 1, 2009, Phillip and his wife Kelly Moss purchased the funeral home from his father. Since 1993, all three facilities have undergone numerous renovations to consistently meet the evolving needs of the community and the services they offer. Phillip and Kelly reside in Breese with their three sons: Alden, Owen, and Bennett. Phillip graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 2000 with a B.S. in Mortuary Science. He is a licensed funeral director/embalmer and a licensed insurance producer. Phillip serves as the Clinton County Coroner, a position he has held since 2008. He is an active member of the community, actively involved with St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese, the Breese Knights of Columbus, and various professional organizations.
Aimee McGowan joined Moss Funeral Home in September 2017, bringing her experience as a licensed Funeral Director/Embalmer. A graduate of the Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago, Aimee is originally from Waterloo, Iowa, where she was born and raised. She currently resides in Lebanon.
