Create a thriving marriage that will benefit your children for life.
As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), I, Allan Todd Sarner, have spent years studying and working with individuals, couples, and families to help them overcome various challenges. My journey in therapy began when I went through counseling after the divorce of my parents. This experience not only helped me understand myself better but also sparked my interest in the field of counseling. I pursued my Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco and gained extensive experience working with children and teens in group homes and foster care settings.
However, after becoming a father in 2003, I began to re-evaluate my approach to parenting. This led me to find the work of Dr. Gordon Neufeld, a renowned Clinical and Developmental Psychologist, and his philosophy on the importance of secure attachment between parents and children. This insight convinced me to shift my focus to working with parents through attachment-based coaching, helping them strengthen their relationships with their children and resolve relationship issues.
As I delved deeper into the field, I discovered the success of couples counselors using the attachment approach to help solve relationship issues. This sparked my interest in expanding my practice to include attachment-based couples counseling. I then studied Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples with its originator, Dr. Sue Johnson, and Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy with Dr. Stan Tatkin. My California license number is 47572.
The Approach
Traditional counseling often focuses on managing symptoms rather than curing the underlying causes of relationship issues. Attachment-based couples counseling takes a different approach. It aims to rediscover and strengthen the attachment bond between partners, helping them address the wounds from their past and learn effective communication and relationship skills. This approach not only helps couples address their individual needs but also fosters a deeper connection and understanding between partners.
