Celebrating Your Individuality
Community Caregivers of Greater Derry is a non-profit organization that was established in 1988 by a group of concerned citizens who recognized the need for practical assistance and support among elderly and disabled residents in the area. Our mission is to enrich lives and support individuals to remain independent in their own homes with dignity and safety for as long as possible. We serve the towns of Chester, Danville, Derry, Hampstead, Londonderry, Sandown, and Windham in Southern New Hampshire.
Our services are designed to foster independence while providing meaningful volunteer opportunities and creating a more caring community. We offer three complementary programs that cater to the unique needs of our clients. Our Volunteer Care-Giving Program provides free in-home and transportation assistance to vulnerable elderly and disabled individuals from the seven Southern New Hampshire communities we serve. Our Loaner's Closet for Durable Medical Equipment loans out wheelchairs, walkers, commodes, bath seats, and other medical equipment at no charge to anyone in New Hampshire who needs it for as long as they need it. Finally, Project Upkeep is a special set of "handyman" volunteers that make handicap improvements and repairs to our low-income clients' homes.
Client Services
At Community Caregivers of Greater Derry, we prioritize the improvement of the quality of life for everyone we serve. Our caregiving program supports and assists the elderly, disabled, chronically and temporarily ill. We provide a range of services, including rides to appointments, shopping for disabled persons, visiting homebound persons, staying with elderly persons to enable caregivers to go out, helping around the house, and more. Our services are primarily need-based and not dependent upon financial eligibility.
Loaner's Closet
Our Loaner's Closet for Durable Medical Equipment provides medical equipment loans at no charge to anyone in New Hampshire who needs it for as long as they need it. We loan out wheelchairs, walkers, commodes, bath seats, and other medical equipment to support individuals in their recovery and daily living.
Volunteer
We welcome volunteers who have an hour a week or an hour a month to give. Volunteering with Community Caregivers of Greater Derry is a meaningful way to give back to the community and support elderly and disabled residents in need.
Donations
Our mission is made possible through individual donations, foundation support, and the towns we serve. We welcome donations of money, equipment, or time to support our programs and services.
History
Community Caregivers of Greater Derry was founded in 1988 by Joyce Gray, the founding executive director. Joyce received a call from Peter Hey, the then Reverend of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, who had an idea to gather a coalition of seven churches to collectively help the elderly and disabled remain in their homes as long as possible. The idea was modeled on the three-year-old caregiving group in Manchester. Peter was finding, as we do today, that there are many elderly and disabled local residents who were in need of a little help.
