Mohs Surgery
Mohs surgery is a specialized technique used to treat skin cancer. This procedure offers a high cure rate, minimal discomfort, and preservation of normal tissue, thereby minimizing scarring. Our team of expert surgeons, including Dr. R. Gordon Mowry, has extensive training and experience in performing Mohs surgery. This technique is particularly useful for treating skin cancer, as it allows our surgeons to precisely remove the affected tissue while preserving surrounding healthy tissue.
The Mohs Surgery Process
The Mohs surgery process typically involves several steps. First, the visible portion of the tumor is surgically removed. A thin layer of skin is then removed around and under this area and divided into sections. Our surgeons then microscopically examine each section for evidence of remaining cancer cells. If cancer cells are detected, the surgeon marks their location on a "map" and returns to the patient to selectively remove another layer of skin from precisely where the cancer cells remain. This process continues until no more cancer cells are found.
