Nurturing young minds and spirits, one step at a time.
Our Story
Kilohana Preschool was established in 1966 with the goal of providing a nurturing environment for young children to grow and develop. Our founding vision was to be in ministry to young families in the community of Niu Valley, and we've been proudly serving East Honolulu ever since. Our school is non-denominational and non-profit, licensed by the Child Care Licensing Division of the Hawaii Department of Human Services (DHS).
Philosophy and Values
At Kilohana Preschool, we believe that every child is unique and brings their own strengths and experiences to our school. We strive to create an environment that fosters physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual growth. Our goals are to:
- Provide a nurturing, relaxed, and secure environment where self-concepts are enhanced, independence is encouraged, free-choice decisions are offered, and individuality is respected.
- Encourage each child to develop a positive self-image and a positive attitude toward school.
- Provide opportunities to develop physical skills and coordination through active play.
- Help your child develop good listening skills, learn the importance of cooperation and taking turns, acquire social skills, and respect for oneself and others.
Program and Curriculum
Our program is designed to provide a well-rounded education that includes language arts, cultural awareness, music, art, and pre-reading readiness skills. Our trained teachers and staff provide a balanced curriculum that includes both teacher-directed and child-initiated activities. We use a variety of teaching methods and materials to cater to different learning styles and abilities.
Facilities and Resources
Our school is equipped with four spacious, bright classrooms, a napping room, and a large playground that includes a sandbox, swings, an area for riding tricycles, and a modern play structure designed specifically for preschool-age children. We also have a covered lanai for rainy day activities and special programs.
Admissions and Enrollment
We are licensed to admit 68 pupils from two to six years of age, who are toilet trained, on a non-discriminatory basis without regard to race, color, or religion. Applications are processed in the order received, with preference given to returning students. A non-refundable registration fee is due with the application form, and a tuition deposit is paid upon entrance.

Overall Experience
Kilohana Preschool has received rave reviews from multiple parents, praising its top-notch staff, ample space for learning and play, and nurturing environment. The school's director, Auntie Lori, is particularly commended for her hard work, kind demeanor, and ability to communicate effectively with parents.
Classrooms and Teachers
Many parents have expressed their satisfaction with the school's small class sizes, which range from 12-15 children. The teachers are described as caring, loving, and patient, with a focus on compassion, empathy, and kindness. The preschool's curriculum is designed to prepare children for kindergarten readiness and is taught in a fun and creative way.
Facilities and Activities
The school's facilities, including its newly renovated and shaded playground, are praised for providing ample space for outdoor learning and play. The chapel is also mentioned as a bonus, allowing children to learn songs and perform quarterly for the school and church.
Communication and Support
Parents appreciate the school's communication efforts, including regular Class Dojo postings and weekly updates on their child's progress. The school's director and teachers are also available to answer questions and provide support.
Negative Experiences
Unfortunately, two parents have shared concerns about their experience at Kilohana Preschool. One parent, Alyson Rossi, expressed disappointment with the new director, feeling that the school's focus on art projects had changed, and that her grandson's projects were carelessly discarded without notice. Another parent, Kristin Stewart, stated that the school had undergone significant changes, including the termination of long-standing teachers and the introduction of a new, unstructured approach to education.
