Our History

In 1982, Walter Schamu & Associates opened its doors in Baltimore's Federal Hill neighborhood, marking the beginning of a legacy of unique and revered architecture. The firm started out with a focus on residential work but quickly expanded its services to include historic preservation, renovation, rehabilitation, and adaptive use. By the 1990s, the firm had grown significantly, with Anthony Machowski joining as a partner and bringing with him a wealth of experience in healthcare, education, and research industries. During this time, Victor Greco, AIA, also joined the firm and opened a satellite office in Wheeling, West Virginia, providing design services to clients in West Virginia, western Maryland, and Ohio.

In the 2000s, the firm, now known as Schamu Machowski Greco (SMG) Architects, continued to thrive, taking on notable projects such as the renovations to the Hippodrome Theater and the rebuilding of the B&O Railroad Museum, both completed in 2004. The firm's success continued to grow, earning multiple recognitions for their work.

In 2014, the firm underwent a rebranding and was renamed Schamu Machowski Patterson (SM+P) Architects, welcoming Charles Patterson as a partner. Today, SM+P continues to uphold the tradition of excellence established by its predecessors, embracing a future filled with new and exciting clients and projects.

Our Team

Our team at SM+P is comprised of experienced, talented professionals who are dedicated to delivering exceptional results. Led by our founding principal, Walter Schamu, FAIA, our team includes Charles Patterson, AIA, LEED AP, who serves as the President and Director of Design, and Drew Beier, among others.

Walter Schamu, FAIA, Founding Principal

Walter founded what is now SM+P Architects back in 1982. He has worked on numerous projects, including historic, residential, religious, and club projects. Walter is highly respected throughout the region for his expertise in historic architecture and is the founder of the Baltimore Architecture Foundation.

Charles Patterson, AIA, LEED AP, President and Director of Design

Charles joined SM+P in 2000 and has worked on projects of varying scale and complexity. He has a deep interest in design and, although he enjoys the modernist vocabulary, he has also skillfully handled numerous projects of a historic nature.

Drew Beier

Drew is an integral part of the SM+P team, bringing his unique perspective and skills to every project he works on.
