Fresh, sustainable, local seafood and produce served daily.

Nestled in the heart of San Francisco's vibrant Performing Arts District, Hayes Street Grill has been a beloved culinary destination for over four decades. We're more than just a restaurant; we're a gathering place for food lovers, artists, and those who appreciate the warmth and ambiance of a true neighborhood gem. Our story began in 1979, when three partners, Patricia Unterman, Dick Sander, and Robert Flaherty, shared a vision to create a restaurant that would perfectly complement the world-class performances happening just steps away at the Opera House, Davies Symphony Hall, and Nourse Auditorium. Inspired by the classic San Francisco tradition of grills like Tadich and Sam's, we set out to elevate the experience with a focus on the freshest, sustainably sourced ingredients.

Our commitment to quality is unwavering. We exclusively use fresh, never frozen, seafood, certified by the esteemed Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch, ensuring that every dish is a celebration of ocean bounty. Our produce is sourced directly from a network of trusted local farms, many of whom participate in the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, a testament to our dedication to supporting the surrounding community. Patricia Unterman, a founding board member of the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, personally handpicks the finest seasonal offerings, crafting a menu that changes daily to reflect the abundance of what each season has to offer. From briny Monterey squid to juicy day boat king salmon, succulent Half Moon Bay sand dabs to luscious fall tomatoes bursting with flavor, our menu is a veritable showcase of the best California has to offer.

Our Team and Our Legacy

Beyond the quality of our ingredients, the heart and soul of Hayes Street Grill lies in our team. Many of our cooks, dining room staff, and maitre d's have been with us for over 25 years, creating an atmosphere that is both welcoming and intimate. The warmth and camaraderie extend to our patrons, many of whom are performing artists, artistic directors, and individuals who have come to consider Hayes Street Grill their culinary haven. The walls of our restaurant are adorned with autographed photos of these regulars, a testament to the lasting connections forged over shared meals and conversations.

Patricia Unterman, our co-owner and founder, is a respected figure in the San Francisco food scene. Having served as the restaurant critic for both the San Francisco Chronicle and The San Francisco Examiner, she's known for her discerning palate and insightful commentary on the culinary landscape. Dick Sander, our other co-owner, brings a wealth of experience in the restaurant and food industry, overseeing daily operations, finance, and wine selection.

From our humble beginnings, Hayes Street Grill has grown into a cherished institution, recognized not only for its exceptional cuisine but also for the warm, welcoming atmosphere that has made it a true San Francisco landmark. We invite you to experience the magic of Hayes Street Grill for yourself, where every meal is a celebration of fresh ingredients, culinary artistry, and the enduring spirit of community.
