Our History
Doherty Funeral Service was established in 1896 on 7th and Rodney Streets in Wilmington, by founding funeral director, JJ Doherty. In 1954, Bill Doherty, Sr., JJ's nephew, opened the long-standing Wilmington location at 1900 Delaware Avenue. Bill, Sr. then expanded with the Pike Creek location at 3200 Limestone Road, which was constructed and opened in 1974. It was his sincere care for people, noble character, and work ethic that laid the foundation and established the three pillars on which we operate: Compassion, Excellence, & Integrity.
Our Services
We offer a wide range of services to meet the unique needs of each family we serve. Our traditional services include visitations, funeral ceremonies, and burial options. We also provide cremation options, including direct cremation, memorial services, and cremation with a traditional funeral service. Additionally, we offer a Family Care program to assist families in resolving important matters following the funeral, such as social security, insurance, and pensions. Our comprehensive Bereavement Services include a Holiday Hope Program, individual grief therapy, grief support groups, and more.
