Our History
ACAC's roots date back to the early 1970s when our founder, Phil Wendel, first joined a health club. With a passion for sports and fitness, Phil recognized the need for a better way to operate fitness clubs. He observed the frequent changes in ownership and eventual closures of many clubs, prompting him to open the first ACAC in Charlottesville, Virginia in the 1980s. With a focus on making fitness accessible to everyone, Phil set out to create a health club where people of all ages and fitness levels could feel comfortable exercising.
