Our History
Established in 1988, the same year the iconic Canada Place building was constructed in downtown Edmonton, the Canada Place Child Care Society (CPCCS) has been a beacon of exceptional childcare for over three decades. We are situated on a spacious portion of the second floor, capable of nurturing and supporting up to 80 children. Throughout its two decades of existence, CPCCS has firmly established itself as a leading non-profit daycare provider in Edmonton. This enduring success is largely attributed to the dynamic leadership of Gillian Richards, the daycare's Executive Director for many years. Gillian's commitment to stability within an ever-changing industry was instrumental in modernizing policies and procedures pertaining to accreditation and licensing in Alberta. Her legacy extends beyond her tenure; CPCCS thrives on the dedication of its long-serving staff and a team of dedicated parents who actively contribute through volunteering in various capacities.
Gillian Richards' retirement marked a poignant moment for CPCCS. To honor her exceptional service and enduring influence, the Gillian Richards Endowment Fund was established. Its mission is to raise financial resources to support children within our community. Tragically, Gillian passed away in 2017, leaving behind a profound legacy of excellence and a steadfast standard that continues to guide CPCCS today. The Gillian Richards Memorial Fund, established in her honor, remains dedicated to supporting children within the Edmonton community, perpetuating her passion for their well-being.
Our Philosophy
At CPCCS, we believe that "the environment is a child's third teacher, " a philosophy deeply rooted in the Reggio Emilia approach. This internationally acclaimed constructivist philosophy has proven remarkably effective in early childhood education for over four decades. In the Reggio Emilia setting, children are viewed not merely as learners but as strong, capable, competent individuals brimming with potential. They are respected as researchers and co-learners, actively engaged in their own educational journeys alongside their dedicated educators. Our educators act as keen observers and meticulous recorders, attentively noting each child's unique interests and needs.
Our thoughtfully curated environment is brimming with books, intriguing objects, and stimulating materials, providing a rich tapestry of learning opportunities. The curriculum organically evolves from the children's own interests, fostering their individual expressions and encouraging diverse modes of communication, particularly those that transcend the spoken word.
This holistic approach extends to our unique programming offerings. We believe in enriching our children's experiences through specialized classes in French Language, Music, and Yoga. These programs are carefully designed to align with the Reggio Emilia philosophy, providing children with opportunities to explore their world through diverse and engaging avenues. We recognize that children arrive in this world equipped with "a hundred languages, " eager to express themselves in multifaceted ways.
Our Programs
At CPCCS, our programs go beyond the traditional framework of early childhood education. We strive to create an enriching and stimulating environment that nurtures each child's individual growth and development. Our team of dedicated educators implements dynamic and play-based learning experiences that encourage critical thinking, creativity, social-emotional development, and a love for lifelong learning.
We believe in providing opportunities for children to explore and express themselves through various mediums, including art, music, movement, and dramatic play. These experiences are carefully curated to foster a sense of wonder, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for the world around them.
Additionally, our commitment to building a diverse and inclusive community is reflected in our specialized programming. We offer French Language Classes, Music, and Yoga, enriching our children's experiences beyond the core curriculum.
